Our Story
I stumbled across Rucking in early 2017. I Had just signed up to Walk the Kokoda trail in Papa New Guinea for it's 75th anniversary commemorating the end of World War 2. To start preparing for the 96km Trek I bought my 70ltr backpack ,loaded it up with the advised training weight of 16kg to replicate the gear needed for the trek and got out on the trails. I soon realised the need for a smaller more practical option was needed for ease of use. I scoured the internet to see what other options were available and weight vests seem to be the common product available. I purchased a weight vest and weight bricks and got back out of the trails. Soon after I realised this wasn't the right choice, Headaches would set in almost immediately and shoulder and neck pain would soon follow. I pushed through hoping I just needed to get used to it but nothing changed as well as noticing restriction in my breathing due to the weight being distributed on my chest and back. So it was back to the drawing board.
Owning an apparel business as a side hobby at the time meant designing and creating products wasn't new to me so that's what I did. I contacted some backpack manufacturers, put together a quick design and got a sample made. I then spent the next few years mucking around with my pack and other basic store bought backpacks and weight vests but found myself using them less and less as life got busier.
Rewinding back to my early 20's I suffered a serious back injury which resulted in not being able to work for 6 months and a 16 week rehabilitation plan set out by a Physiotherapist and lucky for me my now wife Gemma was studying Exercise Physiology at Uni. So after completing the Kokoda trail and as the periods between Rucking became greater I realised the frequency of my back flair ups increased and realised during my consistent rucking periods that my back pain would subside quickly and my quality of life would vastly improve . With this realisation I incorporated Rucking more frequently into my workout routine and it became very clear the benefits of Rucking kept multiplying. Gemma and I started diving into the science of Rucking and scoured the internet and started digesting every paper, blog and podcast on the topic to learn as much as we could. At this stage Rucking products were non existent in Australia and getting a hold of any was difficult and expensive because it had to be shipped internationally. So with that we decided let's take what we have learnt and design our dream Rucker. We already had a shortlist of manufacturers we wanted to work with so we started contacting them and were honoured to receive a reply from our dream manufacturer who are responsible for making products for some of the biggest backpack / hiking brands and multiple countries military products .So we started the sample process , Multiple factory visits ,Countless design modifications and 3 years later and we finally were ready to bet our life savings on a product that we whole heartedly believe in. During the design process we had sampled weight plates but now we had to source a quality product to match our Rucker. A goal for this brand was to have Australian made Ruck plates made from Australian iron ore and help sustain Australian steel manufacturing . That in itself turned out to be more of a challenge than expected . From start to finish it took 6 months and we had our proudly Australian made plates ready to be paired with our fresh shipment of our Every Day Rucker 1.0 .
We built this brand because we truly believe in Rucking and its benefits and ability to help people from all walks of life . Our goal is to supply the highest quality Rucking gear in Australia and continue to grow the movement of Rucking.
Thank you for being a part of it.
